Segundo levantamento realizado pela Confederação Nacional dos Municípios (CNM), dos 141 municípios, 110 ainda utilizam o sistema de lixão ou aterro controlado, o que representa 78% do território no estado.

Desde 2010, com a criação da Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos (PNRS) o descarte do lixo passou a ser planejado, necessitando de um lugar com estrutura específica para impedir danos ao meio ambiente e à saúde pública. Nos aterros, existe impermeabilização do solo para evitar a contaminação e também a drenagem dos líquidos e gases tóxicos provenientes da decomposição dos materiais.

Segundo o Diagnóstico Municipal para a Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos, apenas 31 prefeituras já destinam o lixo em aterros sanitários. Entre as cidades polo, Alta Floresta, Juína, Sinop, Sorriso, Barra do Garças e Cáceres possuem o encaminhamento correto dos dejetos sólidos.

Destinação do Lixo

No levantamento do CNM, também estão na lista das prefeituras que estão em dia com a destinação do lixo Nova Monte Verde, Lucas do Rio Verde, Santa Rita do Trivelato, Nova Ubiratã, Chapada dos Guimarães, Jaciara, Campos de Júlio, Vale de São Domingos, Canarana, entre outros.

Em 15 de julho foi sancionado o marco legal do saneamento básico, que trouxe mudanças na gestão municipal de resíduos. Entre as alterações estão o veto ao apoio técnico e financeiro aos municípios para a eliminação dos lixões e implantação dos aterros sanitários.
